About Me

I’m an unschooler.

Also: a mother, a sister, a daughter, and a partner to the best bass player in town. And now — in the fall of 2011 — a cafe owner. One of these days I might have something to say about this newest development. We’ll see.

Anyway. I like trees and mountains and winding creeks and furry animals.

I grew up in the snow belt. Now I live in the midwest. This just sort of happened. I’m still trying to figure it out.

I make art and zines. I mow the yard like a good neighbor. I play guitar and a bit of banjo, and sometimes I write songs. My teenage kid and I travel when we can, usually within the geographic boundaries of the United States of Amnesia America, but we have designs on some far-away places.

I watch tv. I like Dr. Who. Amelia Pond is my favorite companion.

I write about unschooling because it interests me, and because I have some experience with it, and because I think school is a terribly stressful institution that wreaks a lot of havoc on young lives and families. If you’re looking for alternatives to school, either for yourself or for your kids, it’s probably helpful to you to know that there are many of us out here who are making satisfying lives for ourselves (and our families) without it.

Lots of people write about unschooling with considerably more authority than I do. You can find some of them in the sidebar links on the homepage.

I tend to be an irregular blogger. If you like what I write and don’t want to miss stuff, you might want to subscribe, or follow, or click on the email updates link in the homepage sidebar to get stuff delivered to your inbox.

Life is good.

That’s all.
